The 4 C's

When talking about diamonds, everyone has heard about the 4Cs - the universal method for assessing the quality of any diamond, anywhere in the world. But what do they actually mean and how do lay-persons fully understand the essential elements of selecting a good diamond? Let’s begin

Carat Weight

Carat weight indicates how much a diamond weighs. A metric “carat” is defined as 200 milligrams. Each carat can be subdivided into 100 “points”, which allows very precise measurements. Evaluating two diamonds of equal cut, clarity and color, carat weight will tip the scale because larger is more rare and therefore more expensive. In the same way, two diamonds of equal carat weight will vary considerably depending on the other 3Cs.

Cut

The most important aspect of a diamond is the cut - which ensures the perfect shape and angle of each facet and determines that light reflects brightly and perfectly from one facet to the next. Dalumi craftsmen cut expertly proportioned and symmetric diamonds to ensure precise positioning and shape.

Clarity

To the naked eye, a VS1 and an SI2 diamond may look exactly the same, but these diamonds are quite different in terms of overall quality. Natural diamonds are created from carbon exposed to tremendous heat and pressure deep in the earth. During this process, a variety of characteristics occur - the internal ones are called “inclusions” and the external “blemishes”. Viewed under 10-power magnification, inclusions and blemishes can be noted and graded accordingly. While no diamond is absolutely flawless, the closer it comes - the higher its value.

Color

Surprisingly, the color evaluation of diamonds is based on… the absence of color. And yet, “regular” diamonds are referred to as “white diamonds”. So let’s make some sense of the color scale. The industry’s color grade evaluates diamonds against an established color value of a “master-set” of stones, and assigns it with a letter from “D” (colorless) all the way to “Z” (light yellow). The closer a diamond is to being “colorless”, the rarer it is. Many of the color distinctions are so slight that they are literally invisible to the untrained eye, however they make a very big difference in the price. Dalumi offers a wide range of diamonds, from “colorless” and “near colorless”, and all the way to its unique collection of Golden Diamonds - a luxury brand of 100% natural yellow diamonds representing the entire spectrum of yellow hues.
